Getting Ready

I have compiled a list here of things that are helpful to have on hand when welcoming your new puppy!! Please note that your puppy will come home with the following:

Blanket that smells like mom and litter mates.
Vaccination records
Toys that smell like mom and litter mates
Puppy contract
Small bag of food (on request)

Please read through the following and feel free to click on pictures for links to Amazon.

***Please note that all puppies will be eating

Pro Plan Sport All Life Stages Salmon and Rice . Purple and black bag with a pink stripe.

Your pup will be sent home with A small amount of food that will last 1-4 days. I recommend not changing foods for at least a few weeks during the major transition of moving to a new home.

I would highly recommend investing in a probiotic for the first few weeks you have your pup home.  The stress and anxiety from the transition from our farm to your home can cause bacteria "BLOOM" and tummy trouble. A good probiotic with live cultures will go a long way in helping to ease the transition! There are two that I like linked  above. But the Forti Flora is far superior to any other probiotic I have used for dogs.

1.Books That are very helpful!!!

The Art of Raising A Puppy,  by The Monks of New Skete

These are wonderful books that you will want to reference many times as you raise your pup. Very highly recommended.

2.Food and water bowls

I recommend stainless steel and tip proof. There is also a great water bowl called. “Slobber Stopper” that works well to keep floors dry:)

3. Collar, tag and leash

Remember your pup will grow fast. Wait to buy the fancy collar when they are 6 months or so! A inexpensive, adjustable for growth, nylon collar works best for puppies. The best leashes at this stage are easy on the hands and light weight. Nylon or leather.  I do not use retractable leashes as I find them to give too much dominance to the dog. These should be used only after the dog is respectful on a flat, traditional leash and reliable with commands. If you are doing an airport pick up, your pup will have a leash and collar already for travel included in that additional fee.

I love these Blueberry brand Leashes and collars. They are very high quality and the handle of the leash has a convenient clip to tie out stations around your home. The collars are also a martingale style so the pup can have comfort around the home but cannot slip out of the collar when the leash is attached. They come in many colors!!! you may want to wait to order after your pup arrives to get the right size;)

4. Grooming items

Brushing and other grooming should be done often to get your pup use to  regular grooming. It is best done in the evening when the pup is tired and ready for sleep.  You may decide you want to schedule a grooming appointment as soon as your dog has finished its vaccinations for this same reason. While pups are with us we work daily on conditioning for grooming as this will be a big part of a newfypoos life.Your pup will go home exposed to all the things he or she will encounter in a grooming salon. We have a large professional grooming tub and dryer on site for conditioning the pups to regular grooming with a professional groomer. You can further this work by daily touching and handling of ears, tail, muzzle, toes, etc. Some things you may want to acquire.

I love to start pups young with the dremel for nail filing
I clip the nails with clippers and then do a quick file with the dremel.
I use this weekly as preventative. Keeps ears healthy and clean!
I LOVE using a high powered blow dryer to blow out dirt and dust. This way you don't have to bathe often. Over -bathing can seriously dry the skin and remove beneficial oils and bacteria that keep the skin and coat healthy. Over-bathing can also lead to long term skin allergies!!!

HEMPZ Shampoo/Conditioner
I really like the HEMPZ products. A little goes a very long way!

5. Crate

I would suggest a medium to XL  size crate. Medium if you plan only to use for early house training and large or XL for more extended use and travel. Newfypoos run HOT so hold off on all the fancy bedding and blankets and just put a nice towel in the bottom for the first bit. For this reason I also don't recommend a plastic crate for home use as they can retain more heat than the wire type. Please see the crate training/house training tab for more information.

6. Toys/Chews

The first couple of weeks you will be setting all the rules for your pup. One of these rules regards mouthing. I never allow my pups to mouth. I do not allow them to put their mouth on a human starting from day one. This means when they are old enough to have the urge to do so, we have enough toys around at all times that we can place one in their mouth while we interact with them. Rope bones, plush toys, small rubber balls, anything that looks fun!  I encourage you to continue this at home. If you can keep this up through week 10 or so you will notice that mouthing will not be an issue for your pup. And when they are really wound up....GO FOR A WALK!!! Try not to get their crazy puppy energy out by rough play but by walking. This will go a long way in teaching appropriate behavior!

You will hear me say this many more times but please know I am happy to talk you through any training or other issues that may arise with raising your pup. If it is a quick question of should I buy x, y, and z...just shoot me a txt. Otherwise give me a call and we will talk it through. I am so very excited for you all!
