The most common request we get from families is that they want a "mellow" puppy!
If I have sent you this link, a "Mellow Puppy" is a priority for you.
The Newfoundland is a fairly low energy dog. This means that compared to other doodle breeds Newfypoos will generally need less daily exercise to meet their energy level needs. Golden retrievers, Labrador retrievers, Old English Sheepdogs, Australian Shepards etc., are all working, high energy dogs and are bred to work in the fields, on farms, or hunting all day long. This means that meeting their exercise needs takes more time and energy than meeting the exercise needs of a Newfoundland.
We have all know dogs of these breeds that would also be considered "mellow" as their owners meet their individual dogs need for exercise so the dog is calm and relaxed in daily life. We also have all met dogs from those breeds that are far from "mellow" as their owners do not meet their daily exercise needs.
So how do you get a "Mellow" dog?
The answer is simple. Choose a puppy with an energy level that fits your family and daily life! We start our pasture walks with the puppies starting at about 5 weeks of age. We keep records of the litter and note the pups that have more energy, and can go for a longer time, and those that have less energy and poop out early. These results are available on puppy choosing day to help you find a good fit for your family.
EVERY PUPPY WILL NEED A DAILY WALK!!!!! There are no exceptions to this. Every dog needs to be walked for mental stability and to avoid behavioral problems. If you do not wish to walk a dog....GET A CAT!!!!
Choosing a breed such as the Newfypoo will decrease the amount of time daily your spend walking compared to other breeds. When young, puppies have more energy. Please expect to spend a bit more time walking your dog during the first year or so of life. This will ensure your pups exercise needs are met and set the dog up for long term mellow temperament.
Also avoid encouraging hyperactivity in the home. Many people are not aware they are encouraging and praising and training the dog to be hyperactive by how they play and interact with their pup. Too much time at dog parks and doggy daycare can also be very overstimulating and set the pup up for anxiety, hyperactivity, and restlessness. The best exercise is a long walk with you at "heel"!!!!!! You can arrange a few play dates now and then with other dogs for socializing, or stop off for a quick romp in the dog park on your way home from your walk!
